When Are Lock Repairs Needed?

Locks may not work for a variety of reasons - some of these require a locksmith and some do not.

• If they key turns but the lock bolt does not operate, then the lock is broken and requires repair
• If it is hard to turn the key, try lubricating the lock mechanism with graphite powder via the keyhole. If it is still hard to turn the key, then the lock may be damaged and may require a small repair
• If the key is stuck in the lock, again lubricate with graphite or silicone based lubricant or try holding the centre of the lock still with one hand whilst removing the key with the other. If this doesn't work, call us.
• If the key is broken in the lock, call a locksmith
• If your house has been broken into, we recommend lock replacement rather than repair. New locks are more difficult to pick and provide higher security levels
• If the key usually fits and turns, but this time doesn't appear to do so, and the weather has been icy, then the lock is likely to be frozen - try a de-icer or hairdryer before calling a locksmith
• If the latch appears to have dropped below the strike plate hole, then the hinges on the door have dropped. Tighten them first before calling a locksmith
• If you have to lean on a door to make it latch, weather stripping may be the culprit. Remove or re-position the weather stripping until the door latch fits properly
