How to Choose Reputable Bristol Locksmiths
Bristol - Bath - Cheltenham - Weston-super-Mare - Swindon
Are you looking for reliable and knowledgeable locksmiths to use on a regular basis or perhaps the worst has happened and you are locked in or out of your house or office? Maybe you lost your keys or had them stolen or perhaps a door lock has failed? So what do you do? It could be late at night or half way through a working day and you need a solution fast.
Friends and family should always be your first port of call, especially if you are locked out at night. Give them a ring, or go to their house and ask their advice. Do they know a 24 hour locksmith in Bristol who can be relied upon? Hopefully they’ll give you the number of a professional local locksmith they have used in the past.
If the answer is no, then the only option is the phone book, Yellow Pages or the internet. But how do you not get caught out? There are various horror stories circulating about locksmiths who charge exhorbitent fees without invoicing and insist on being paid there and then when you might not have that amount of cash immediately to hand. You don’t want to be in the situation where your problem is solved but a locksmith is holding you to ransom over an excrutiatingly high fee and threatening to call the police.
So when you find a local locksmith and are booking them, what should you ask?
- Are you a member of any professional bodies? There are various locksmith associations – the Master Locksmiths Association is a good guide as to quality as locksmiths have to pass an exam to become members

- Where are you based and how soon can you get here? You’re keen to get the problem solved, and you don’t want to be waiting in the cold too long! Knowing there is a local office, means there could also be some local accountability
- What do you charge? Are there any call out charges? Are there any extra charges I should be aware of? You want to know as much as possible before the locksmith arrives, even if he can’t tell you an exact figure. They should be upfront about charges, not hazy. Prices will vary with what is required. Making a new key will not be as expensive as fitting a new lock, for example and time of call out may also affect charges
- How do I pay? If they say by invoice, you can relax a little! If they say cash only, you should try elsewhere
- If you go to the internet, look for testimonials from previous customers and length of experience can help instill a sense of trust; it only takes a few minutes
