What is a Mortice lock?
Mortice door locks are door locks that have to be fitted inside the mortise cut-out in the door or piece of furniture into which the lock is to be fitted. They are widely used in all types of interior and exterior door in the UK. Castle Security supplies, replaces and fits mortice locks to domestic and business premises.

Mortice dead locks fit into the door and throw a dead bolt into a “keep” in the frame when a key is turned in the lock. The most popular brands are Chubb, Union and Yale which we supply. We can also source other makes of mortice lock if you require them.

Mortice sash locks are an extension of the mortice dead bolt. They not only have a dead bolt but also have a latch designed to hold the door in the frame when the bolt is not in use. All major makes supply mortice sash locks for interior and exterior doors to BS 3621 standards or as simple three lever systems. |

Other mortice locks available include:
- Night latches – Just like a Yale cylinder night latch, except they are morticed into the door. The latch locks into the keep when the door is closed and can be locked via a key or turn of the handle.
- Escape locks – These are used in student and nursing accommodation where it is necessary to be able to escape from the inside, for example in the event of a fire, even if the door is locked externally.
- Bathroom locks – come in a multitude of designs and finishes. Morticed into the door, they provide privacy rather than security. They even come with engaged symbols if required.
- Sliding door locks – For sliding doors, where space is at a premium
- Knob sets – where the lock is integral to the handle, often used in hotels in the past where master key systems were in operation, these knob sets are now available for replacement purposes where needed.
- Multipoint locking devices – these are locks that bolt the door into the frame at multiple points for added security and strength.
- Mortice screw in cylinders - for commercial applications and most frequently used on aluminium shop doors
