Reduce Insurance Premiums with Alarms and Locks
Bristol - Bath - Cheltenham - Weston-super-Mare - Swindon
Protecting your home and reducing your insurance premiums go hand in hand. Insurance companies like a safe bet, but as they do not always personally inspect your home, they like to know that someone else thinks it is a safe bet too! Most firms reduce premiums if:
- A burglar alarm is installed and maintained by a professional company. In the UK alarm installers are accredited and the accreditation bodies include the NSI, the SSAIB and the AISC; (check with your insurance company to see which body they recognise). If the alarm is professionally installed it is more likely to work than a DIY alarm and if it is subject to an annual maintenance and service, then it will continue to work and insurance companies like the certainty this gives them and recognise it in your reduced premium
- The correct door and window locks are fitted. Most insurance companies insist door locks conform to BS 3621 standards in the UK and also that downstairs windows are fitted with security locks. Many modern windows come with integral locks, if you have older windows you will need to fit secondary locks from reputable manufacturers like Chubb, ERA and Ingersoll. Mortise window locks are normally the most effective and least visible.
- You are part of a Neighbourhood Watch area. Inform your insurance company of this fact and they will usually reduce your premiums – it’s the safe bet thing again!
Reducing Your Premiums Further
Many insurance firms reward customers further with discounts when you first apply, if you apply online or if you purchase buildings and contents insurance together, rather than separately. If you build up your no claims discount over a period of 5 years or more, this can amount to a 30-50% reduction in premiums. If monthly premiums are going to be tough, and you think there is a low risk of you claiming, then consider paying a higher voluntary excess – this will also reduce your premiums. Ask about other discounts you may be eligible for.
